Tell Me How This Ends:Russia and the West in An Era of Renewed Confrontation

In the aftermath of the conflict in Ukraine and Russia's annexation of Crimea, relations between Russia and the West have fallen to a new post-Cold War low. The United States and the European Union have imposed economic sanctions, and frozen bilateral ties across a wide range of issues and programs. The Kremlin holds firm to a path of resurgent Russian nationalism with troubling implications for relations with neighboring states and the wider Eurasian region. Yet Russia is still a major energy and trading partner for Europe, a leading actor in international security, and a vital participant in various regional conflict resolution efforts. With the 2009 "Reset" long gone and with mutual mistrust on the rise, is there any hope for restoration of pragmatic cooperation between Russia and the West? What does Russia want, what may Vladimir Putin do next, and how should Americans respond?
 
Matthew Rojansky is the director of the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington DC. A well-regarded expert on U.S. relations with the states of the former Soviet Union, Rojansky has advised governments, intergovernmental organizations, and major private actors on conflict resolution and efforts to enhance shared security throughout the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian region. From
2010 to 2013 Rojansky was the deputy director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has also served as executive director of the Partnership for a Secure America (PSA). Rojansky is an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins SAIS and American University, and a participant in the Dartmouth Dialogues, a U.S.-Russian conflict resolution initiative begun in 1960. His writing has appeared in the International Herald Tribune, the Washington Post, and Foreign Policy.
