Post Tropical Storm Irene Tree Planting

Volunteers are needed to plant 800 trees and shrubs along the White River. We really need volunteers to make this job light work. Please dress to get dirty in long sleeves, long shirts, and close-toed shoes. Gloves, shovels, and light snacks will be provided.

We need volunteers to help rehabilitate the riparian buffer zone between the recreation fields and the river. Native plantings will help get this natural process started. The digging is easy, most of the trees and shrubs are small and easy to handle, and water is as close as the river. We’ll have instructors to teach you how and help. Students from Community College of Vermont are helping with the organization. The White River Partnership is supplying tools, the planting plan, and is delivering the trees. Clifford Park recreation facilities were destroyed by Irene’s floodwaters. The heavy cleanup has been done.

Think of this as an investment in the future and a jump start on Arbor and Green-up Day. At some time in the future, you and your children will see the shady, wooded riparian zone and will remember the day they planted trees in the bare sandy soil next to the river. If they witness another flood, they will know that the riparian zone slowed the rush of water and helped protect this park and other downstream lands.
