Kicking Off the Second Year of the Coolidge Salon Series (White River Junction, VT)?Dec. 19, 2014?Ed Eastridge and Ted Mortimer will be performing at Hotel Coolidge on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at 6:00 pm. The performance kicks off the second year of the Coolidge Salon Series, an ongoing series of live performances on the first Friday of every other month. The Coolidge Salon Series also aligns with White River Junction's First Fridays, a night each month when downtown businesses stay open late with special sales and events. Ed and Ted are two of the Upper Valley's best-known and most popular guitarists. They have teamed up to offer the music of many of their favorite artists, covering a wide variety of genres including, blues, rock, jazz, classical, surf, tango, swing, and music for film. Ed is a well-known teacher and performer of jazz, classical, and contemporary music. He is the founder of Big Mo Recording, an independent record label, and he maintains a busy performance schedule as a solo artist and in larger ensembles. Ted is the founder of Dr. Burma, one of northern New England's premier rhythm and blues bands. He has recorded numerous CDs with Dr. Burma, the Stone Cold Roosters, and others. In 2001 he co-wrote and recorded the soundtrack for Nosey Parker, a feature film made by John O'Brien, an independent filmmaker from Vermont. Ted also stays busy performing and recording with a variety of other groups. The performance takes place in the hotel's Vermont Room where seating in front of the great stone fireplace provides an intimate setting. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the music begins at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door (children under 12 are free). The program will last for approximately 50 minutes and will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Complimentary munchies will be coupled with a cash wine/beer bar. Background and Concept of the Coolidge Salon Series The Coolidge Salon Series is the newest component of the hotel's long-term commitment to the arts as part of White River Junction's growing arts community. The hotel's Zollikofer Gallery displays and offers for sale art from local artists, with artist receptions held on alternate first Friday of each month. Hotel Coolidge also has a long-term relationships with Northern Stage and the Center for Cartoon Studies. The venue for the Coolidge Salon Series is either our Vermont Room or the larger Junction Room, one in which the audience can appreciate and relate to the work of the performer in a concert format. The Coolidge Salon Series is brought forth with the intention of providing local performing artists an opportunity to perform in a setting that places the emphasis on their work for a short time before an attentive audience.

Jan 24 - Apr 5    Farmers, Warriors, Builders: The Hidden Life of Ants
January 24–April 5, 2015 —Small yet abundant, with complex and wildly diverse lifestyles, ants are everywhere, living lives mostly hidden from our view. What if we could see into their world...on their level? What would we learn? What parallels could we draw between them and us?

Farmers, Warriors, Builders: The Hidden Life of Ants explores how ants face problems similar to ours: obtaining and distributing resources, allocating labor and energy, maintaining civil unity, and defending against outsiders. Their lives are at once familiar and strange. Familiar because human societies accomplish similar tasks; strange because ants perform those tasks with behaviors and tools unique to their world, and with a single-minded savagery that can be startling.
