Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling within the Forces of Nature exhibition

February 1– May 26, 2014

Explore biodiversity, human and animal architecture, ecosystems, and energy and water conservation —all from the perspective of the "home". See innovative home building technologies and learn about strategies that can help restore the health and viability of natural systems. On view in the second-floor gallery February 1–May 26, 2014.

What can we learn from nature to make our dwellings more sustainable parts of the earth's natural systems? Shelter is a universal human need—a need we share with other living things. Since buildings consume lots of resources and almost half of all the energy used in the United States it's important that we make them more efficient. Explore biodiversity, human and animal architecture, ecosystems, and energy and water conservation —all from the perspective of the "home", in a new traveling exhibition at the Montshire Museum. Visitors will see innovative home building technologies and learn about strategies that can help restore the health and viability of natural systems in the Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling Within the Forces of Nature, at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, February 1 through May 26, 2014.

Apr 12    (ILEAD LECTURE EVENT) Kosovo Today: Emerging from the Rubble
The war in Kosovo in 1998-99 and Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008 were headline events in their day. Recently, Kosovo has been back in the headlines as one of the justifications for Russia’s recent annexation of Crimea. So what do we need to know about Kosovo?
This special ILEAD lecture will be presented by Dean Pineles, a retired Vermont trial judge who worked as an international criminal judge with the European Union in Kosovo from 2011-13. He will describe
important historical, cultural and demographic features of this tiny troubled country in the Balkans, including the war and its aftermath. This will serve as the backdrop for a discussion of several of his high profile criminal cases, including a war crimes case and an international human organ trafficking case. He will also discuss the legacy of Kosovo in light of the geopolitical chess game in Ukraine.

Dean Pineles is a graduate of Brown University, Boston University Law School, and Harvard’s Kennedy School. Prior to his 21 years of service as a Vermont trial judge, Dean also served as legal counsel to Governor Richard Snelling, as Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Labor and Industry, as Deputy Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Health, and as an Assistant Attorney General. He took on numerous international Rule of Law assignments in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Georgia. From 2011-2013, Dean spent 28 months as an international criminal judge in Kosovo, dealing with a variety of high profile cases that included war crimes, organized crime, judicial corruption, and illegal organ trafficking. He has been a resident of Stowe since 1974, and retired from the Vermont bench in 2005.

Apr 22    An(other) Inconvenient Truth: Security & Privacy in the Digital Age
In the revolutionary digital age in which we live, computers and rapidly expanding internet systems amplify human interaction and experience in amazing ways. While this constant flow of new technology is impressive, even approaching indispensable, it also presents risks. In this special lecture, a private sector computer security researcher, who also teaches at Dartmouth, will explore how these risks have evolved to threaten critical infrastructures and individuals around the world.

Dr. Charles C. Palmer is Chief Technology Officer for Security and Privacy for IBM Research where he focuses on special projects relating to security and privacy, unique customer challenges, and national security issues. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth College

where he teaches Security and Privacy and other courses. Prior to taking on these roles, he led the Security and Privacy departments at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center for several years, where he also founded IBM’s ethical hacking lab.

He has also led study groups there for thirty years. Last year’s was a Harvard trip called An Insider’s Visit to Rome. One that occasion he met Pope Francis and later published his impressions in The Nation. Francis is the fourth pope Harvey has met, and, drawing on his experience of teaching and research in Latin America, he has done extensive research on the present pontiff ’s previous career in Argentina. This lecture will be focused on Pope Francis’ ambitious plans and the severe obstacles he will meet.

Harvey Cox is Hollis Research Professor of Divinity at Harvard, where he began teaching in 1965, both at Harvard Divinity School and in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. An American Baptist minister, he was the Protestant chaplain at Temple University and the director of religious activities at Oberlin College, an ecumenical fraternal worker in Berlin, and a professor at Andover Newton Theological School. He has been a visiting professor at Brandeis University, Seminario Bautista de Mexico, the Naropa Institute, and the University of Michigan.
