Oct 21 Montshire Museum DamNation Film Screening and Q&A |
You're invited to join us for an amazing evening focused on river health.
We will be screening DamNation--a powerful film odyssey that explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to a growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our flowing rivers. This event is co-sponsored by The Nature Conservancy of Vermont.
Here in Vermont, our dams may not be considered big but they are plentiful. Our rivers are host to over 1200 dams. Two hundred of these dams are considered "deadbeat," meaning that they serve no utility or purpose. The Connecticut River itself comprises one of the most obstructed watersheds in the nation with impacts on fishing, recreation and water quality. The Nature Conservancy is working to remove "deadbeat" dams from our waterways while working with hydro dam operators to better manage how those dams hold and release water.
Following the film we will host a Q&A featuring Kim Lutz, Connecticut River Program Director for The Nature Conservancy, John Rangonese FERC License Manager for TransCanada, and Lael Will, Fish Biologist for Vermont Fish and Wildlife.
Admission is free. We welcome the community to attend and learn more about river health in Vermont, so invite your friends and neighbors!

Join us for a full day of family workshops exploring the science and art of snow and ice.
Snow and frozen water—from frozen waterfalls to ice covered rivers and lakes, is part of the winter landscape. Experiments will range from observing the beauty and symmetry of ice crystals to investigating the insulation properties of snow, and a family studio art activity that explores the intersection of light, color, and our frozen environment. Investigate Ice! is a collaboration between the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College and the Montshire Museum of Science as part of the Hood’s exhibition “Ice Cuts”, a series of paintings by Vermont artist Eric Aho. |

Feb 19 How Did You Get Here? Students with Disabilities and Their Amazing Journeys |
The relatively recent inclusion or mainstreaming of students with special needs into American education has been nothing short of meteoric. The inside story of this development will be related in this special lecture by one of the country?s well-recognized champions of disability rights. THOMAS F. HEHIR is Professor of Practice in Learning Differences at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As director of the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs from 1993-1999, Professor Hehir led the federal implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Previously, as associate superintendent of the Chicago public schools, he implemented major changes in special education service delivery and significantly improved that city?s IDEA compliance. He also has served the Boston public schools for several years as Director of Special Education. |

Mar 31 Earth from Above: Using Satellite Imagery to Investigate Climate and a Changing Arctic |
This five-week course will explore the Earth’s dynamic processes using satellite imagery and your own laptop or home computer.
Learn how to make your own “visualizations” using NASA and NOAA satellite images and gain a better understanding of the Earth’s rhythms. With a focus on climate change, we’ll uncover the seasonal variations of ocean temperatures and changes in arctic ice coverage. Hands-on investigations and readings from New Yorker staff writer Betsy Kolbert’s Field Notes from a Catastrophe will help us better understand the drivers of the Earth’s climate and the impacts of climate change on the Arctic.

Apr 14 Survival in South Africa Under Apartheid |
The scourge called apartheid, state sponsored racial segregation, infected South Africa for almost half a century. This special lecture will relate what it was like for white and black South Africans to live under apartheid, the legacy of the anti-apartheid movement and what life is like in this extraordinary country today. Dartmouth graduate Neville Frankel, author and award-winning documentary film maker, was born in Johannesburg and immigrated to the United States with his family as a teenager. In 2005 he returned to South Africa for the first time in 38 years and has returned many times since. After graduating from Dartmouth, he did doctoral work in English literature at the University of Toronto and embarked on a successful writing career with a well-received political thriller, The Third Power. |

Apr 25 America?s Forced Migration Crisis: A Central American Perspective |
The continuing surge of immigrants across America?s southern border - thousands of men, women, children fleeing violence, mainly in Central America - constitutes a major social, economic and political crisis. It has become an increasingly contentious issue in the 2016 US Presidential election campaign, focusing more attention on the country?s failed efforts to enact long-promised immigration reform. This special Osher lecture will provide a first-hand examination of the roots of this crisis and suggestions for possible solutions by a prominent religious leader from the region. Martin Barahona has been Bishop of the Anglican/Episcopal Church of El Salvador for 23 years. He has worked nationally and internationally with ecumenical, interfaith and civic groups to help overcome the violence and oppression in El Salvador. He will discuss causes of local disruption in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras and explain some of the efforts being developed to address the problems. |

Oct 18 Drug Courts: Justice Meets Treatment Speaker: Chief Justice Tina Nadeau, NH Supe |
Justice Tina Nadeau will describe an alternative approach to incarcerating offenders with addiction: Drug courts. Drug Courts have been analyzed for more than 20 years and the conclusion is clear: Jail and prison do not change behavior or addiction but drug courts can and do. The origins of drug courts and their success in addressing opioid and other addictions -- one of the nation's (and New Hampshire's) most critical social problems -- will be the focus of this annual Osher lecture. The Hon. TINA NADEAU, of Lee, NH, daughter of a retired jurist and Dartmouth grad, was appointed Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court by Gov. John Lynch in 2011. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1985 and her law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now the University of New Hampshire Law Center. She is a board member of the New England Association of Drug Court Professionals as well as non-profit New Futures organization that works to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug problems in New Hampshire. |

Dec 2 A Viennese Holiday Evening |
A Viennese Holiday Evening: The Johann Strauss Family History and Music Osher Members: $20 General Admission: $25 Tickets purchased prior to 5:00 pm on November 21 will be mailed to attendees. Tickets purchased after that time will be held at the Will Call desk at Spaulding Auditorium for pick-up on the evening of the performance. Call 603-646-0154 to purchase your ticket! Two generations of Viennese produced some of the most memorable music of the 19th century. Hundreds of instantly recognizable, enduring melodies were enjoyed in the marble palaces and the wine bars of the Viennese woods. This was a talented family riven with tension, feuds and jealousy, living in a city that was desperate but not serious, in a country that sparkled with waltzing but was unraveling between vineyard and Danube. What appeared to be a bright future in Vienna proved to be a setting sun. Through the personal and political chaos, the Strauss family composed hundreds of waltzes and polkas to which the Viennese – anxious to forget their troubles – danced and drank as they and their country hurtled towards the First World War, and oblivion. Dr. David Bisno, after setting the scene of fin de siècle Vienna, will weave the Johann Strauss family story of success, sex, scandal and tragedy with the music that everyone loved then and loves now. From the "Tritsch-Tratsch" and "Pizzicato" polkas to the "Die Fledermaus" operetta, from quadrilles to mazurkas and from the "Lorelei Rhein Klänge" and "Blue Danube" waltzes to the "Coronation" and "Radetzky" marches, you will be swept away with the beauty and tragedy, the jealousies and affairs of this family and their three-quarter time music. In addition to performances of beloved Strauss compositions by Daniel Weiser, Musical Director of Classicopia, and his musicians, dancers Drayton and Amber Harvey will delight us with waltzes throughout the evening. Prior to the performance, don’t miss your chance to start the evening off with a special meal! Five area restaurants will offer pre-theater Viennese dinners for those who reserve.
