Aug 5 - Aug 17    Tinkering Lab: Open Studio for Makers

Tinkering Lab: Open Studio for Makers

August 5-17, 11 am-4 pm

Build something! The Tinkering Lab is a new, experimental space where visitors try their hand at engineering whimsical contraptions using real tools and materials. Tinkering Lab activities require cooperation, concentration, and a playful "tinkering mindset": you'll design, test, fail, redesign, and share your creations alongside other participants. Program is designed for adults and families with children age 8 and over. Programs vary by date. Some activities include:

Electric Island: visitors build houses and buildings, add electricity to their building for lights and other devices, then add their buildings to a ‘community built’ island city.

Scribble Bots: visitors make moving robots that trace fun patterns with markers using weighted toy motors, batteries, wires, and other everyday materials.

Tinkering Lab Notes: Real Tools Develop Real Skills—the Tinkering Lab uses real tools and small parts and is not recommended for children under 8 years of age. Activities in the Tinkering Lab are designed for in-depth participation; plan on spending 25-45 minutes in the Lab.

Oct 17    Kevin Pearce @ Spark! Community Center
Former Olympic Hopeful Kevin Pearce and brother David Pearce at Spark! Community Center on October 17th at 6pm!

The Spark! Community Center will host a talk with Kevin Pearce, former professional snowboarder, on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 6pm at its location at 75 Bank Street in downtown Lebanon, NH.

Kevin suffered a traumatic brain injury while attempting a Cab double cork in the halfpipe in Park City, Utah on December 31, 2009 at the peak of his Olympic training. Now he is an internationally renowned sports commentator, motivational speaker, and advocate for education and research on traumatic brain injury. He is also a Sports Ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society.
David Pearce is the third of four brothers in the Pearce family. Now 28 years old, he lives in his own home in Vermont, which he shares with two housemates. David’s weekdays are filled with three different part-time paid jobs: working in the offices of a local payroll agency, in the operations department of a fitness center and in the warehouse and offices of his parents’ business. In his free time, David enjoys Special Olympics VT, a social club (of which he is a founding member) and a Men’s Group which meets once per month. David was an important part of Kevin’s recovery process and has often been called “the secret star” of The Crash Reel!

The Pearce brothers are sons of world-renowned glassware designer Simon Pearce, who has had a glassblowing factory in Quechee, Vermont since 1981.

The Pearce brothers will talk about their lives, their 2013 HBO documentary film “The Crash Reel” and the social movement they have spearheaded that brings people together to connect, educate and empower people through a mindful approach that focuses on brain injury prevention, rehabilitation and brain health. Refreshments will be provided.

A $10 donation is suggested per person.
All proceeds will benefit The Spark! Community Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing social and educational opportunities for individuals with special needs throughout the Upper Valley. Spark! believes in an integrated society where everyone is valued for their abilities rather than their disabilities. Its core philosophy is that everyone has a hidden talent or gift worth sharing with the world -- a “spark” if you will. Too often that spark is overlooked in people with disabilities, which is why a community center was created to help them reach their full potential while it strengthens their ties to the community.

Jan 2    The 7th Coolidge Salon Series, Guitarists Ed Eastridge & Ted Mortimer, Jan. 2
Kicking Off the Second Year of the Coolidge Salon Series (White River Junction, VT)?Dec. 19, 2014?Ed Eastridge and Ted Mortimer will be performing at Hotel Coolidge on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at 6:00 pm. The performance kicks off the second year of the Coolidge Salon Series, an ongoing series of live performances on the first Friday of every other month. The Coolidge Salon Series also aligns with White River Junction's First Fridays, a night each month when downtown businesses stay open late with special sales and events. Ed and Ted are two of the Upper Valley's best-known and most popular guitarists. They have teamed up to offer the music of many of their favorite artists, covering a wide variety of genres including, blues, rock, jazz, classical, surf, tango, swing, and music for film. Ed is a well-known teacher and performer of jazz, classical, and contemporary music. He is the founder of Big Mo Recording, an independent record label, and he maintains a busy performance schedule as a solo artist and in larger ensembles. Ted is the founder of Dr. Burma, one of northern New England's premier rhythm and blues bands. He has recorded numerous CDs with Dr. Burma, the Stone Cold Roosters, and others. In 2001 he co-wrote and recorded the soundtrack for Nosey Parker, a feature film made by John O'Brien, an independent filmmaker from Vermont. Ted also stays busy performing and recording with a variety of other groups. The performance takes place in the hotel's Vermont Room where seating in front of the great stone fireplace provides an intimate setting. Doors open at 5:30 pm and the music begins at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $10 at the door (children under 12 are free). The program will last for approximately 50 minutes and will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Complimentary munchies will be coupled with a cash wine/beer bar. Background and Concept of the Coolidge Salon Series The Coolidge Salon Series is the newest component of the hotel's long-term commitment to the arts as part of White River Junction's growing arts community. The hotel's Zollikofer Gallery displays and offers for sale art from local artists, with artist receptions held on alternate first Friday of each month. Hotel Coolidge also has a long-term relationships with Northern Stage and the Center for Cartoon Studies. The venue for the Coolidge Salon Series is either our Vermont Room or the larger Junction Room, one in which the audience can appreciate and relate to the work of the performer in a concert format. The Coolidge Salon Series is brought forth with the intention of providing local performing artists an opportunity to perform in a setting that places the emphasis on their work for a short time before an attentive audience.

May 8    Stagecoach Transportation Free-Fare Friday!
VERMONTERS ARE READY TO GO! FOR A 9th ROUND
Randolph, Vermont…The ninth annual Way to Go! Smart Trip Challenge kicks off on May 4th, and Vermonters throughout the state are signing up now. So far, about 440 smart trip travelers have pledged to take part in this effort to reduce driving costs, air pollution, and traffic.
Way to Go! participants pledge to take the bus, carpool, telecommute, bike or walk to work, school and other trips during the weeks of May 4th – 15th. While reducing the impact of driving solo on their wallets and on Vermont’s air and roadways, participants can earn prizes, including the Carbon Cup award for teams with the highest percentage of Way to Go! participants.
In support of this statewide Challenge, Stagecoach is offering Fare-Free Friday on May 8th.
“Fare-Free Friday is a great incentive for people to try out the bus,” said Jim Moulton of Stagecoach, a partner organizer of the challenge. “We take great pride in the work we do to improve the social, environmental, and economic health of the community and we’d love for you to see first-hand how we do it on May 8th.”
There’s still time to sign up for the Challenge at waytogovt.org. Businesses, schools, communities and individual teams with the highest percentage of participants will be recognized at an award ceremony at the State House in Montpelier on June 11th.
This spring’s Challenge aims to top the strong results brought in by last year’s participants, who saved a combined $40,100 at the gas pump, drove 299,666 fewer miles, and kept 208,599 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air. Oct 21    Montshire Museum DamNation Film Screening and Q&A
You're invited to join us for an amazing evening focused on river health.
We will be screening DamNation--a powerful film odyssey that explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to a growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our flowing rivers. This event is co-sponsored by The Nature Conservancy of Vermont.

Here in Vermont, our dams may not be considered big but they are plentiful. Our rivers are host to over 1200 dams. Two hundred of these dams are considered "deadbeat," meaning that they serve no utility or purpose. The Connecticut River itself comprises one of the most obstructed watersheds in the nation with impacts on fishing, recreation and water quality. The Nature Conservancy is working to remove "deadbeat" dams from our waterways while working with hydro dam operators to better manage how those dams hold and release water.

Following the film we will host a Q&A featuring Kim Lutz, Connecticut River Program Director for The Nature Conservancy, John Rangonese FERC License Manager for TransCanada, and Lael Will, Fish Biologist for Vermont Fish and Wildlife.

Admission is free. We welcome the community to attend and learn more about river health in Vermont, so invite your friends and neighbors!
