Oct 18    Drug Courts: Justice Meets Treatment Speaker: Chief Justice Tina Nadeau, NH Supe
Justice Tina Nadeau will describe an alternative approach to incarcerating offenders with addiction: Drug courts. Drug Courts have been analyzed for more than 20 years and the conclusion is clear: Jail and prison do not change behavior or addiction but drug courts can and do. The origins of drug courts and their success in addressing opioid and other addictions -- one of the nation's (and New Hampshire's) most critical social problems -- will be the focus of this annual Osher lecture. The Hon. TINA NADEAU, of Lee, NH, daughter of a retired jurist and Dartmouth grad, was appointed Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court by Gov. John Lynch in 2011. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1985 and her law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now the University of New Hampshire Law Center. She is a board member of the New England Association of Drug Court Professionals as well as non-profit New Futures organization that works to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug problems in New Hampshire.

Dec 2    A Viennese Holiday Evening
A Viennese Holiday Evening: The Johann Strauss Family History and Music Osher Members: $20 General Admission: $25 Tickets purchased prior to 5:00 pm on November 21 will be mailed to attendees. Tickets purchased after that time will be held at the Will Call desk at Spaulding Auditorium for pick-up on the evening of the performance. Call 603-646-0154 to purchase your ticket! Two generations of Viennese produced some of the most memorable music of the 19th century. Hundreds of instantly recognizable, enduring melodies were enjoyed in the marble palaces and the wine bars of the Viennese woods. This was a talented family riven with tension, feuds and jealousy, living in a city that was desperate but not serious, in a country that sparkled with waltzing but was unraveling between vineyard and Danube. What appeared to be a bright future in Vienna proved to be a setting sun. Through the personal and political chaos, the Strauss family composed hundreds of waltzes and polkas to which the Viennese – anxious to forget their troubles – danced and drank as they and their country hurtled towards the First World War, and oblivion. Dr. David Bisno, after setting the scene of fin de siècle Vienna, will weave the Johann Strauss family story of success, sex, scandal and tragedy with the music that everyone loved then and loves now. From the "Tritsch-Tratsch" and "Pizzicato" polkas to the "Die Fledermaus" operetta, from quadrilles to mazurkas and from the "Lorelei Rhein Klänge" and "Blue Danube" waltzes to the "Coronation" and "Radetzky" marches, you will be swept away with the beauty and tragedy, the jealousies and affairs of this family and their three-quarter time music. In addition to performances of beloved Strauss compositions by Daniel Weiser, Musical Director of Classicopia, and his musicians, dancers Drayton and Amber Harvey will delight us with waltzes throughout the evening. Prior to the performance, don’t miss your chance to start the evening off with a special meal! Five area restaurants will offer pre-theater Viennese dinners for those who reserve. Jan 15 - Sep 4    Making Music: The Science of Musical Instruments
Discover the science and the art behind making and playing musical instruments in a brand new exhibition.

Music inspires creativity, evoking emotion and communicating, on a level that words cannot. Musical instruments are expressions of human design, engineering, and innovation driven by the desires of musical expression. Visitors to Making Music: The Science of Musical Instruments can explore how musical instruments are created and how they are played, investigating the relationship between key design variations, the sounds produced, and stories of the people who make and play musical instruments.

The exhibits in this exhibition include sections on string instruments, percussion, air instruments, and electronic instruments. Each section includes stories of the people who make and play these instruments, as well as opportunities for visitors to experiment with the ideas and science behind the instruments themselves. Real examples of instruments from each family are on display, with video of musicians playing each.

In addition, a separate exhibit area allows visitors to play in a band together, where they can choose to play either a guitar, a drum set, or a keyboard, to experience how these instruments allow a group of musicians to create music together.

Throughout this new 2,500 square foot exhibition, visitors become a part of the process of both making instruments and playing them.  They discover that all instruments, from a simple flute to a synthesizer, are tools that use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to make the music that affects us deeply.

Oct 17    Fundamental of Lean Office 101

VMEC will supply all materials for this training including a laptop.

Manufacturers and most non-manufacturing organizations need an effective way to learn and introduce proven Lean tools and concepts in office and administrative environments. Lean organizations produce greater value with higher quality in less time. In the beginning, Lean tools and concepts were only applied on the factory floor. Today, organizations of all sizes are applying the power of Lean to their office and administrative processes because front end inefficiencies and errors directly impact a customer’s experience – which can affect quality, customer service levels, and ultimately, company profitability and company growth.

At VMEC, we have a great solution. Our Fundamentals of Lean Office 101 workshop focuses on the unique application of Lean to an office where processes are not always visible. Using an interactive approach, students will use several tools to learn the best way to see a process, identify waste and determine the Lean tools to use to create a more effective administrative organization.

To develop this workshop, VMEC worked with Carlos Venegas, author of Flow in the Office: Implementing and Sustaining Lean Improvement in the summer of 2011. Building on the deep 16+ year experience of the VMEC team in teaching and implementing Lean, the Center incorporated concepts from Carlos’ training and developed a totally NEW 8-hour workshop that leads participants through a fun, hands-on application of Lean techniques in a simulated office setting. Attendees use powerful Lean tools and learn the best ways to ‘see’ a process, identify waste in many forms, and use Lean tools to create a more efficient and cost effective administrative function or organization.

This class uses a variety of exercises – including a simulated office situation using laptop computers – to demonstrate Lean concepts and illustrate the quantifiable benefits that can be achieved when applying Lean in an office or administrative setting. The tools taught in this session increase operational effectiveness, provide better clarity to job roles and functions, increase process ‘flow’ and improve productivity and profitability. A combination of lecture, video and in-class activities are used where you will learn the importance of focusing your activities on how they provide value to the customer, how to map processes to make waste visible (which can then be minimized or eliminated) and to determine where to make Lean changes.
