Spring is the time of year when nature reveals its bounty and when foragers eagerly await the arrival of many edible wild foods including fiddleheads, ramps and morels. There are so many delicious wild edible plants and fungi; it can be intimidating to know where to start.

Whether you consider yourself an experienced forager or are interested in learning the basics, join VINS for an adventure this spring. VINS will host The Mushroom Hunting Foundation founders, Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt, for a unique workshop.

Beginning with a slideshow, Bouchard and Schmidt will cover all the basics of mushroom science and safety, explain the best species of the season and will then focus on the ones considered “safe for beginners.” Afterwards, the group will hike into the forest for a guided mushroom hunting experience. Presenters will demonstrate tools and tricks of the trade as mushrooms are collected – some for study, some for recipes. For the grand finale, we will return to the VINS Classroom for a delicious cooking demonstration, where participants can enjoy the astonishingly varied flavors of several gourmet mushroom snacks. This is sure to be an unforgettable experience!

Pre-registration required by Tuesday, May 28. Participants should dress for hiking in the woods and bring lunch and water.

About the Presenters:
Ryan T. Bouchard is the author and photographer of the groundbreaking new book Gourmet Mushrooms of the Northeast 2019. Emily Schmidt also studies our local mushroom species and their nutritional values, and teaches creative cooking that highlights their many unique flavors. Together, they created The Mushroom Hunting Foundation along with educating thousands of people about safely enjoying America’s wild mushrooms.

Jul 12 - Jul 13    The 38th Annual Prouty and Prouty Ultimate
The Prouty, July 13, (and the Prouty Ultimate, July 12 and 13), is the biggest charity challenge north of Boston. This home-grown event raises money for groundbreaking cancer research and crucial patient supportive services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC). The Prouty has been going on for 37 years raising more than $36 million for this NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center serving rural northern New England through its six regional locations and nine partner hospitals throughout New Hampshire and Vermont.
The Prouty Ultimate  - the premier two-day, 200 mile bike ride - begins in Hanover, NH, on Friday, July 12, and cycles through the glorious Vermont countryside on Day One, and then the Prouty Century route on Day 2 (or any of the other Prouty routes including the Gravel Metric century route for the experienced cyclist that encompasses some gravel, hard-pack, and road riding).
The Prouty draws more than 4,000 participants from as many as 38 states and five foreign countries to bike (20-, 35-, 50-, 65-, 77-, or 100-mile routes); walk (3k, 5k, and 10k residential and wooded routes; scull or sweep 5, 10, 15, or 20 miles on the gorgeous Connecticut River; or golf 18 holes at the beautiful Hanover Country Club. New this year, participants can do The Prouty Xtra mile by completing two events on Saturday. People can also participate as a Prouty Virtual (doing your Prouty event anywhere or anytime doing anything you like as long as you raise money for The Prouty!).
When done with their Prouty events, people come back to the event site (the Richmond Middle School at 63 Lyme Road, Hanover), and enjoy the all-day Prouty party! Food, live music, a chill tent, the Discover NCCC tent, and lots of fun and camaraderie are to be found all day till 4pm. The Friday night before The Prouty, come to the event site to check in and take part in a delicious, complimentary pasta dinner from Lui Lui’s with a side of live jazz, from 5-8pm.
However you Prouty, you know you'll be doing something wonderful for a great cause - while having a great time! What could be better than that?!  For families, individuals, kids, young adults and folks from 0-99!  Come on, let's Prouty!
