May 8    Stagecoach Transportation Free-Fare Friday!
VERMONTERS ARE READY TO GO! FOR A 9th ROUND
Randolph, Vermont…The ninth annual Way to Go! Smart Trip Challenge kicks off on May 4th, and Vermonters throughout the state are signing up now. So far, about 440 smart trip travelers have pledged to take part in this effort to reduce driving costs, air pollution, and traffic.
Way to Go! participants pledge to take the bus, carpool, telecommute, bike or walk to work, school and other trips during the weeks of May 4th – 15th. While reducing the impact of driving solo on their wallets and on Vermont’s air and roadways, participants can earn prizes, including the Carbon Cup award for teams with the highest percentage of Way to Go! participants.
In support of this statewide Challenge, Stagecoach is offering Fare-Free Friday on May 8th.
“Fare-Free Friday is a great incentive for people to try out the bus,” said Jim Moulton of Stagecoach, a partner organizer of the challenge. “We take great pride in the work we do to improve the social, environmental, and economic health of the community and we’d love for you to see first-hand how we do it on May 8th.”
There’s still time to sign up for the Challenge at waytogovt.org. Businesses, schools, communities and individual teams with the highest percentage of participants will be recognized at an award ceremony at the State House in Montpelier on June 11th.
This spring’s Challenge aims to top the strong results brought in by last year’s participants, who saved a combined $40,100 at the gas pump, drove 299,666 fewer miles, and kept 208,599 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air. Way to Go! is designed to raise year-round awareness of transportation options by encouraging participants to travel in ways other than driving alone.
In addition to the fun and prizes associated with the May 4th-15th event, Vermonters have the peace of mind of the Go! Vermont Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) benefit. GRH reimburses bus riders’ and carpoolers’ travel fees up to $70 for unforeseen changes of plans such as work-related or family emergency. Preregistration for GRH is required at www.connectingcommuters.org.
Stagecoach enhances the social, environmental, and economic health of the region by providing safe and accessible community transportation services for everyone. For more information, please contact us at 802-728-3773 or on the web at www.stagecoach-rides.org.

Oct 21    Montshire Museum DamNation Film Screening and Q&A
You're invited to join us for an amazing evening focused on river health.
We will be screening DamNation--a powerful film odyssey that explores the sea change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to a growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our flowing rivers. This event is co-sponsored by The Nature Conservancy of Vermont.

Here in Vermont, our dams may not be considered big but they are plentiful. Our rivers are host to over 1200 dams. Two hundred of these dams are considered "deadbeat," meaning that they serve no utility or purpose. The Connecticut River itself comprises one of the most obstructed watersheds in the nation with impacts on fishing, recreation and water quality. The Nature Conservancy is working to remove "deadbeat" dams from our waterways while working with hydro dam operators to better manage how those dams hold and release water.

Following the film we will host a Q&A featuring Kim Lutz, Connecticut River Program Director for The Nature Conservancy, John Rangonese FERC License Manager for TransCanada, and Lael Will, Fish Biologist for Vermont Fish and Wildlife.

Admission is free. We welcome the community to attend and learn more about river health in Vermont, so invite your friends and neighbors!
