Making Music Special Event at the Montshire
Spend the day building, testing, and tinkering with musical instruments. Come explore the science of sound as we create everything from harmonicas to oboes, xylophones to guitars. 10:30 – 12:00 Experimenting with Music: Drop in any time to find ways to change notes using a variety of materials from water to wrenches. Classroom. 11:00 Penny Harmonicas: Play around with vibrations and airflow as you build a simple harmonica to take home. Discovery Lab. 12:30 Paper Cup Guitars: Make a simple one-string guitar and experiment with string length, tension, and pitch. Discovery Lab. 1:00 Making Music Together: Practice your beats, rhythms, and melodies as we work together to understand the difference between sound and music. Classroom. 2:00 Straw Oboes: Make a miniature oboe and experiment with the different parts of wind instruments. Discovery Lab. 2:30 – 4:00 Rubber Band Guitars: Drop in any time to build a twangy guitar then use contact mics to amp it up. Classroom. 3:30 Bobby-Pin Pianos: Make a little thumb piano as you experiment with pitch and sound. Discovery Lab.
